Even in 2026, with countless guides and patch notes floating around, Hollow Knight: Silksong still has a few spots that make players want to pull their hair out. The Mist is one of them. This eerie, ghost-filled puzzle area isn’t your typical point-A-to-point-B dungeon. It’s a loop, a trap, and a test of patience all rolled into one. The good news? Once a player understands the firefly trick, the whole thing becomes a lot less of a headache — though it’s still no walk in the park.

Where Exactly Is The Mist? 🗺️

Players can reach The Mist surprisingly early. As soon as they unlock the ability to hop off walls — which happens in Act 1 — they’re good to go. From there, head to Greymoor’s Halfway Home and climb the ledge on the right side of the map. Keep going up until the area tops out, and that’s the entrance to Sinner’s Road. Don’t let the small size fool you; Sinner’s Road is deadly, and it’s easy to overlook the hidden passage near the ceiling at the top of the first vertical climb. Head all the way west through that passage, and bam — welcome to The Mist. 🌫️

It’s worth noting that The Mist is one of the only alternate routes into the Citadel that doesn’t involve kicking down the front door. It takes more traversal and a heck of a lot more secrecy, but for players who like to color outside the lines, it’s a refreshing change of pace.

What’s Waiting to Kill You 👻

First-time visitors usually meet one of two fates: they get hugged to death by ghosts, or they fall into the abyss. The ghost problem is the bigger headache. There’s exactly one enemy type in The Mist — phantoms — and they’re not the friendly kind. They idle around until a player gets too close, then they shriek and chase like their lives depend on it. And honestly? They’re relentless. One hug from these specters will drain Hornet’s life force fast, so don’t get it twisted: these aren’t cuddly Casper types.

The second threat is falling. Normally, a little tumble doesn’t cost much beyond a bit of pride. But in The Mist, dropping into the fog sends the player right back to the beginning of the area. No damage, no lost progress — just a frustrating reset. Add in the fact that the developers scattered traps all over the place, and players will want to watch their feet and keep their ears tuned. 👂

How to Actually Get Out 🧚

Here’s where things get interesting. The Mist isn’t a normal area — it’s an endless loop, and brute-forcing it is a fool’s errand. Roughly five different sections need to be solved precisely, and even then, luck plays a role. The first and only hint comes right at the entrance: firefly-like sprites drifting into the fog alongside the player. These little guys are the key to everything.

Scattered throughout each area, the sprites are just waiting for a tune. Players need to approach one and play it a little song by holding down the designated button for their platform. Here’s the breakdown:

Hold that button long enough, and the sprites will start flying toward an exit. That exit is the correct one. They’re essentially leading the way, and their flight path is usually straight to the solution — so keep your eyes peeled. Sometimes they zip across the whole area, so players might need to find another group of fireflies if they lose track.

Once the firefly trick is done and the correct exit is found, players will pop out into the Exhaust Organ. And if they want to wipe The Mist off the map entirely? They’ll need to defeat the boss of that giant cathedral. No pressure, right? 😅

So there it is: The Mist is a puzzle, a ghost gauntlet, and a patience tester all in one. But with a little firefly whispering and some careful platforming, even the spookiest fog can’t keep a determined player down. Just remember — in 2026, this area still claims plenty of victims. Don’t be one of them. 🕯️
