I still remember the moment I sat down at PAX West in Seattle, teaming up with another journalist to enter The Carnevale, the nightmarish fun fair at the heart of Little Nightmares 3. We had roughly an hour, two characters—Low and Alone—and a heady mixture of curiosity and dread. Now, in 2026, after the game's October 9 release and countless co-op sessions since, that preview remains one of my favorite horror memories. Little Nightmares 3 is not simply another sequel; it is a two-player organism, and it demands that you and your partner breathe, panic, and puzzle in sync.

The Carnevale: A Music Box Wound by Trembling Hands

The Carnevale wrapped around us like a music box wound by trembling hands—pretty on the surface, but ready to snap. Monstrous attendees lurked among the stalls, and every cheerful light seemed to hide a trap. Tarsier Studios' series has always excelled at atmospheric horror, and this entry keeps that timeless art style. The camera angles and vistas often make the game look like a Tim Burton film playing out across the screen. From color grading to lighting to character design, Little Nightmares 3 is visually striking and exceptionally moody. The subdued soundtrack keeps focus on whatever terrible thing Low and Alone are witnessing next.

Despite the vague cuteness of its art style, the game isn't afraid to hit players with gruesome moments. At one point, my partner and I slowly tore a deceased carnival attendee's body in half. Our grizzly action was accompanied by the sickening sound of entrails collapsing to the floor. It was disgusting, and it was exactly the kind of moment that makes the series unforgettable.

Co-op Is the Spine, Not a Gimmick

Little Nightmares 3 represents a natural progression. The first game featured a lone protagonist. The sequel brought an NPC helper. This upcoming entry—now released—is built from the ground up for two-player co-op, and it does a great job. While Six's companion role in Little Nightmares 2 added depth to puzzles, Little Nightmares 3 benefits significantly across the board with a second player.

Our cooperation was a two-headed creature learning to walk—awkward, fragile, and occasionally collapsing into the sawdust. We used our characters' unique abilities, and frantic communication was key. It wasn't always graceful. More than once, one of us forgot to crouch at an inopportune moment, and our duo met its demise. The game is not terribly easy. It's routinely challenging, which keeps up the tension even when retrying a sequence. Throughout the room, journalists could be heard screaming, laughing, and panicking as each team explored the carnival.

Weight, Helplessness, and Teamwork

When it comes to moment-to-moment gameplay, Little Nightmares 3's movement and interactions have a weightiness that sometimes enhances the feeling of helplessness. Low and Alone aren't terribly fast, and most actions aren't automatic. To climb through a window, I had to remember to put my weapon away first. Minor mistakes like this can cost precious seconds while being chased. The tension was a porcelain teacup holding back a waterfall.

Combat was relatively straightforward: the player with the bow must first shoot an enemy to disable it, and then the player armed with a melee weapon can finish it off. Even in combat, teamwork and coordination are essential, encouraging my partner and me to call out targets and time our strikes. Some basic actions also call for both players, such as instances where one player hoists the other to an elevated position and subsequently finds a way to bring their partner along.

Low and Alone are relatively tiny compared to the hulking beings that inhabit this nightmare. That sense of helplessness maintains a fearful tension at every moment. While the protagonists have weapons, they're rarely effective against the greater threats, so a great deal of sneaking makes up the bulk of those encounters.

Trial and Error, Triumph and Red Herrings

Little Nightmares 3 is a game of trial and error. Numerous sequences result in a do-over from a checkpoint if anything goes wrong. This was occasionally frustrating when one of us struggled repeatedly with a platforming jump. Still, more often it led to triumphant shouts as the solution to a tricky sequence became clear after a few more tries. In one instance, our characters were separated. Resolving the situation required a significant amount of communication, brainstorming, and restarts. The game sometimes even tosses in a red herring, leading to times when one of us would carry around a worthless object just in case it was the solution to a puzzle. That object became a talisman of paranoia.

Final Thoughts for 2026

Little Nightmares 3 is another leap for the beloved series. Its co-op gameplay meaningfully evolves both the mechanics and the emotional impact. Gaming duos who recently enjoyed co-op jaunts like Split Fiction may want to clear their schedules—though the release has passed, the nightmares remain fresh. If you have a patient partner and a tolerance for being tiny, terrified, and forced to trust someone else's timing, this is essential. I left PAX West rattled, exhilarated, and eager for more. In 2026, I can confirm that feeling never really faded; it just learned to share the controller.

After a co-op experience that demands such precise communication and trust, it's common to start looking for the next game that can deliver a similar rush. The hunt for another title that balances tension, teamwork, and triumph can be as challenging as the puzzles themselves.
